Don’t Starve is one of the most challenging survival games I have ever played. The aim of the game needs no real explanation; the title says it all “Don’t Starve.” Though you are going to starve..again..again and again.

In this highly addictive survival adventure game. You must gather resources to survive but watch out for the monsters, oh and if the lights go out you’re sure to be eaten.

This DLC adds tons of fantastic new content to Don’t Starve, and while not changing the gameplay too much, you’ll certainly face some new challenges and hurdles that you will have to overcome.

So what's new?

Once, the world has generated, and you’ve spawned in, you’ll notice it looks very different from the standard Don’t Starve world. You’ll be on a smallish island with very limited resources. You’ll start playing just like any other game of Don’t Starve, find flint and twigs to make an axe to collect wood.

The first time I spawned in there was no flint on the island and no way for me to obtain any. I was trapped on an island with no resources, and in the end, I had to create a new world. So the world gen could use a little tweaking. While this isn’t game-breaking, it is a mild inconvenience.

While cutting wood, watch out for the newly added snakes in the Jungle Biome, though it may be worth killing some if you have the health and something to fight with as you can use the snakeskin (low drop chance) to make a decent sail later on in the game.

Once you have gathered some basic supplies, you will need to construct a raft and use it to explore the world further due to your very limited resources. You’ll be able to collect seaweed, and various other ocean-based materials while sailing around the sea.

One of the great things about being at an ocean is the abundance of fish, and it’s very easy to advantage of that by using the Trawl Net that is added with this DLC.

Sadly this DLC does not integrate with Reign of Giants it would be nice if they all worked as expansions of the game instead of a new game style.

The graphics while different from the standard Don’t Starve still have that lovely Don't Starve feeling to them and look quite at home around the classic art from the base game.

Don’t Starve Shipwrecked can be quite difficult especially if you’re not experienced with the base game. As such I can’t recommend playing any of the DLC’s until you’ve got a good few hours of the base game under your belt. After that, you can start to think about adding the DLC’s.

The sound fx are mostly stock with a few additions, yet the new sounds do complement the game, such as the brand new music and ambient sound fx including ocean waves and local wildlife.

All in all, I feel like the DLC is a lovely addition to Don’t Starve, the ability to build boats and explore the ocean adds to the game. This DLC is definitely worth the few bucks that it costs.
